5 Steps For Naturally Relieving Your Lower Back Pain

by Igor Marcikic on March 5, 2013

Have you ever tried healing lower back pain on your own? If so then you know that recovery is a process that is painstakingly slow.

Sometimes lower back pain is due to a medical issue, such as something related to the muscular, nerve, or skeletal system. The pain may be localized, or it can radiate to other parts of the body. Another reason people experience back pain is due to injury.

Sports injuries, car accidents, and slips and falls are some of the more popular ways that people can injure their backs. Regardless of how you injure your back, the pain can alter your lifestyle and prevent you from returning to your normal activities.

Healing your back pain after an injury can be easier than you think. A lot of people find success by using RICE, but this does not refer to the food. RICE stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation.

While RICE is the best thing to do immediately after an injury, taking your pain management into your own hands is not quite that easy, especially if your goal is to completely recover. Here are the other steps for recovering through natural healing.

  • SEE A DOCTOR – Even if you do not plan to use traditional medicine, a visit to the emergency room or your general physician can ensure that you get a proper diagnosis. The last thing you want to do is start a course of treatment that leads you down the wrong path.
  • GET TREATMENTNatural remedies are becoming more and more common over traditional pain relievers. Whatever course of treatment you choose, make sure that the person in charge, like a chiropractic or acupuncture professional, is certified.
  • FEELING THE BURN – You have probably heard sports enthusiasts exclaim, “No pain; no gain!” But if you feel pain during your recovery, then that is your body’s way of communicating that you need to rest. If your body hurts, then take a break and rest.
  • AVOID SURGERY – Very few people recover 100% after having back surgery. People with disc problems, sciatica or other nerve damage, and muscle pains are not always good candidates for surgery. Use surgery as a last resort after trying natural healing methods like chiropractic and acupuncture treatments.
  • USE NATURAL THERAPY – There are so many forms of natural therapy you can use to relieve your back pain. Massage therapy, aromatherapy, acupuncture and acupressure, and reflexology are just a few that are available. Your local wellness center can suggest more.

Chiropractic Care for Back Pain

Chiropractic care is one popular natural healing method for back pain. According to WebMD, more than 20 million Americans each year visit a chiropractor, and about 35% of those people do so for back pain relief. (www.webmd.com)

That is because chiropractors use hands-on therapy to manipulate the spine and muscles in the back. This movement stimulates the body which improves circulation and helps send blood to the affected areas.

Proper blood flow is important for total healing and, contrary to popular belief taking anti-inflammatory drugs can delay recovery. That is because these drugs slow circulation, preventing it from reaching your injured muscles, bones, and other body parts.

Having Support during Recovery

During recovery, it is important to have a support system. For most people, this system is made up of their friends and family members. But even the most sympathetic friends and family members may have trouble understanding why you are in pain.

Sometimes it is necessary to find someone who is going through the same thing in order for someone to truly sympathize with all the emotions associated with the recovery process. Your doctor could perhaps suggest a support group in these situations.

However another place where people look for help is online. Chat forums and message board communities for back pain sufferers can connect you with others in your condition.

Keeping a Positive Attitude

Talking to others can help you avoid feeling depressed when you communicate with them in healthy ways. Try to avoid people with a doom and gloom attitude as they could bring your spirits down – especially if their recovery is not going well.

Attitude is everything and when you have a positive attitude about your recovery, you are at less risk for depression. But best of all a positive attitude raises the chance that you will bounce back to your normal, healthy lifestyle faster, and who wouldn’t want that?
